Example of ground truth related to S2 segmentation

This action will define, produce, aggregate and share access to an open access dataset of various ground truth. These data will help the community to train classifiers related to land covering and/or the environment. Technically, their scale will be relevant to Sentinel 2 dataset to accelerate the valuation of this Copernicus data. It will provide an alternative solution to the problem of high price of production of ground truth. Finally, it will help to strengthen studies on global warming, because of the close relationship between vegetation, land covering and environmental approach.

The main purpose of this project is the creation of an open-source web service. This one could be related to the Copernicus website, and should be guided by the EAGLE normalization and concept (to define). Another purpose is to share ground truth created by various partners. Each set of data (specific area with specific topic) will be considered as a pack. Their nomenclature will stay open, even if some recommendations will be defined by the service owner (ex: Eagle recommendations; finer than existing dataset; related Copernicus data, etc.).

The service will define also a level of quality, regarding the expertise of the Ground True collector. This allows students or non-expert producers to share their data. The main scale of acquisition will be related to Sentinel2 segmentation, close to a scale of a "plot" with morphological descriptor (ex: A plot with a different kind of information Class = mix forest/size of tree/percentage of decidious vs sempervirent/type of undergrowth).

The partner could use the works of students of any Copernicus academy (POC and/or Dataset) to initiate the action.

Each contributor will be motivated to participate with data related to environmental approach to facilitate studies about the impact of climate change. The service will explain how to formalize the data, let contributors publish their data (uploading), and will provide visibility of those uploaded dataset for sharing

This proposal could be connected to any actors of the Copernicus academy, already or about to create ground truth data.

Outputs and Results

  • Publication of a first pack of data by the partner
  • Encouraging communication with Copernicus Network for contribution/exploitation of this service
  • First effective contribution of an external partner
  • Production of at least 5 reports describing Copernicus impact (using this service) for different application domains and at least 10 new product (datasets)
