This action will provide technical training for Vietnamese young researchers on the theme of the exploitation of interferometry. It will take place in three stages. The first stage takes place in France. It will enable a student from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology to improve his/her mastering of interferometry with Sentinel 1 datasets on a thematic issue of subsidence due to fast urbanisation in Ho Chi Minh City. At the end of this internship, he/she will go back in Ho Chi Minh to organize a masterclass with his supervisor from France in order to transfer his/her newly acquired skills. The last step will be the production of video support for training in Vietnamese, based on this masterclass. or translation of existing materials.

Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) using space borne sensors have become an established tool for analysis of very small surface deformations. This technique uses multi-temporal SAR images taken at different times to analyse surface deformation [9]. It opens many applications in geology such as monitoring subsidence, earthquake, landslide, etc.

Sentinel 1 could be used to assess subsidence using Permanent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) as was previously done in many places such as Tokyo (Japan), Shanghai (China), Paris (France) and especially for Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC).

This action with allow the team of researchers from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology to continue their first experiments on this subject under the best conditions. Sentinel 1 datasets on the one hand, and Copernicus software and technology on the other hand, will be strongly shared through this action. This partner has been chosen, for spreading abroad Europe the use of Sentinel imagery, as a hub to gather different universities belonging to different Asiatic countries. We have already strong links with Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology which is a guarantee for the success of the project.

This proposal could be connected to any other related topic:

  • Technically: Development of Copernicus Services involving urbanization monitoring by radar.
  • Thematic: Any approach related to monitoring global warming with Copernicus data. (sea level/subsidence)

Outputs and Results

  • Production of a scientific paper on the subsidence of HCMC
  • Organisation of a week of training in HCMC
  • Production of an e-learning resource on the use of Sentinel 1 data for interferometry
