Training session understanding and using SAR data

Four 2-hour online training sessions were held between 9-18 November 2020, followed by a 2-hour Q&A session on 30 November. The course covered a brief history of radar, fundamentals of electromagnetic waves, polarisation, combination of waves, how microwaves interact with surfaces, how radar builds an image and how to access data. A practical session was delivered using Earth Blox, a code-free platform for data visualization and analysis.

Guest speakers from the Marine Management Organisation, Environment Agency and Natural Resource Wales presented case studies demonstrating practical applications of SAR data by public sector environmental bodies. Training sessions were attended by 76 participants from 31 organisations.
