Copernicus session during UN-SPIDER Regional Expert Workshop

A Copernicus session was prepared and contributed to the 3-day UN-SPIDER/ZFL Regional Expert Workshop for Southern African countries titled “Space-based Solutions for Disaster Risk Management and Emergency Response". It was held as a virtual meeting with more than 50 participants, including representatives from national disaster management authorities, earth-observation practitioners, and mapping experts.

During the Copernicus session on 14 July 2021, invited participants presented the global flood alert system “GloFAS”, the global drought observatory “GDO”, and the global wildfire information system under development “GWIS” to the audience. GloFAS, GDO, and GWIS are elements of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service which were identified by the action partners as sources of information which could be of great use for disaster and risk management in Africa.

Besides these presentations, the DLR-action “Sentinels-4-African-DRR” itself was presented, and a discussion was started about the current usage of Copernicus data in Africa, and the needs and requirements on the side of African participants.
